At Least Four Major Hospitals Suffer “Significant Damage” as Hurricane Melissa Batters Jamaica

Written by Primenewsplus

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Health and Wellness Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton has confirmed that at least four major hospitals have sustained significant damage as Hurricane Melissa — now a Category 5 system — continues to devastate parts of the island.

The affected facilities include Noel Holmes Hospital in Hanover, Black River Hospital in St. Elizabeth, Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James, and Falmouth Hospital in Trelawny.

“A Lot Is Happening — It’s Still Unfolding”

Speaking with The Star, Dr. Tufton said damage at the Cornwall Regional Hospital was concentrated in the nurses’ quarters, which had been temporarily repurposed for other uses.

“They are doing some relocation, and in some instances waiting on the rain to relocate others,” Tufton said. “A lot is happening, and it’s unfolding as we speak, so it’s hard to give specifics.”

Major Disruptions at Black River Hospital

In a press release, the Ministry of Health and Wellness confirmed that service delivery at Black River Hospital has been severely disrupted due to storm damage.

The hospital’s administrative block sustained heavy damage, and power supply to several areas was cut.

Emergency protocols were activated early Tuesday, with some patients relocated as a precautionary measure before the storm’s impact intensified.

“We are working closely with the Southern Regional Health Authority and parish emergency services to stabilize operations,” the Ministry said.

Health Workers on the Front Line

Despite the widespread damage, the Ministry praised medical staff for their tireless efforts under dangerous conditions to continue providing care.

“Members of the health team are working around the clock to ensure the safety and continued care of all patients,” the release added, noting that repairs and restoration efforts are already underway.

Melissa’s Powerful Impact

According to the Meteorological Service of Jamaica, the center of Hurricane Melissa made landfall in New Hope, Westmoreland around midday Tuesday, bringing devastating winds and torrential rain across the island.

Social media images show extensive damage to Savanna-la-Mar Hospital and other healthcare facilities as emergency crews struggle to navigate floodwaters and debris.

The Takeaway

As Jamaica begins to assess the full toll of Hurricane Melissa, hospitals remain at the heart of both the crisis and the recovery.

From doctors and nurses working through the storm to patients being evacuated for safety, the message from officials is clear: the fight to protect lives is still ongoing.
