KINGSTON, Jamaica — November 11, 2025 — The death toll from Hurricane Melissa has now climbed to 45, according to Minister of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Senator Dr. Dana Morris Dixon.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, Minister Morris Dixon confirmed that the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has verified the deaths as being directly related to Hurricane Melissa.
“These are confirmed hurricane-related deaths,” she said. “We continue to work closely with the police and relevant agencies as investigations into additional cases proceed.”
Postmortem Examinations Underway
The Minister noted that 33 postmortem examinations have been completed so far, while nine other deaths remain under investigation to determine official cause and classification.
Authorities continue to assess the widespread damage caused by the Category 5 hurricane, which struck the island last week with winds exceeding 175 miles per hour, displacing thousands and devastating infrastructure across multiple parishes.
Government and relief agencies are still engaged in nationwide recovery and humanitarian efforts, while appeals for continued assistance from local and international partners remain active.
“This is a time for compassion, patience, and unity as we continue to recover,” Minister Morris Dixon added.
The Ministry has also mobilized psychosocial support teams for affected families and communities as Jamaica mourns those lost and works toward rebuilding.
