JFJ Welcomes JCF Move to Deploy 1,000 Body Cameras After Deadly Shootings

Human rights watchdog Jamaicans for Justice has welcomed the Jamaica Constabulary Force announcement that 1,000 body-worn cameras are set to be rolled out, with procurement already at an advanced stage.

The update, confirmed by the JCF on Tuesday, comes amid renewed public pressure for greater transparency in policing. Those calls have intensified following a series of fatal police shootings this year that have left 17 people dead.

In a media release, JFJ Executive Director Mickel Jackson said the organisation welcomed the move, even though it arrived later than expected. She stressed that body cameras are a critical accountability tool that can protect both civilians and officers when used properly and consistently.

Jackson also urged Police Commissioner Kevin Blake to clearly outline how many of the cameras will be deployed during planned operations, noting that selective or limited use could weaken the impact of the initiative.

The push for body cameras has long been supported by civil society groups, who argue that recorded interactions help clarify disputed encounters, reduce misconduct, and build public trust in law enforcement.

As the country watches closely, many Jamaicans see the rollout as a test of the JCF’s commitment to transparency at a time when confidence in policing remains under intense scrutiny.
