A Routine Airport Check Turns Into a National Shock
The news that senior gov’t employees arrested at Sangster International Airport were allegedly linked to a major cocaine smuggling attempt has stunned Jamaicans at home and abroad.
What appeared to be a normal departure for New York quickly escalated into a full scale narcotics operation involving hidden compartments, firearms, and dangerous body packing methods.
Hidden Compartments Expose Millions in Cocaine
Law enforcement officials say the suspects, a man and a woman, were stopped at a security checkpoint around midday on Friday. During a detailed search, officers uncovered several false compartments inside their luggage.
Those compartments reportedly contained rectangular packages of cocaine weighing approximately 9.25 kilograms. Authorities estimate the drugs have a street value of about $5.4 million.
A separate search of a handbag also uncovered a quantity of United States currency, further raising red flags.
Home Searches Reveal Gun, Ammunition, and More Drugs
After the airport seizure, officers from the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division carried out follow up searches at both residences linked to the suspects.
Those operations reportedly resulted in the seizure of a Glock 19 pistol, 13 rounds of ammunition, and an additional ounce of cocaine. The firearm discovery has added another serious dimension to the case.
One Suspect Hospitalized After Admitting to Swallowing Pellets
Police also revealed that one individual confessed to ingesting more than 70 pellets of cocaine. He was immediately taken to a medical facility and remains under constant police supervision.
This method of trafficking is considered extremely risky and has been responsible for numerous fatalities worldwide.
Police Say Status Will Not Protect Anyone
Superintendent Patrae Rowe, head of the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division, said the operation reflects intensified efforts to protect Jamaica’s borders.
He stressed that all individuals will be held accountable, regardless of their professional role or social standing, as authorities continue working to dismantle trafficking networks.
