Jamaicans planning a trip to the United Kingdom are being urged to take note of a major change to the visa process that came into effect on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.
The UK Government has officially moved away from physical visa stickers in passports. From this date, travellers who require a visa to enter the UK will instead receive a digital electronic visa — known as an eVisa.
What Is an eVisa?
An eVisa is a secure online record that replaces the traditional paper visa sticker. Once approved, a traveller’s visa will be electronically linked to their passport and stored digitally. There will be no physical document to carry or present at the border.
Travellers will be able to view and manage their immigration status through a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) online account. The eVisa will contain details of a person’s identity, immigration status and any conditions attached to their visit — including permission to work or study where applicable.
The change applies to Jamaicans travelling to the UK for tourism, business, study or any other short-term purpose.
Why Is the UK Making This Change?
The shift to eVisas is part of the UK Government’s broader effort to modernise and strengthen its border security system. British High Commissioner to Jamaica, Alicia Herbert, is encouraging Jamaican travellers to get familiar with the new system well before their travel date.
Herbert noted that support will be available to travellers during the transition period to ensure the process is as smooth as possible.
Important Notice for Dual Nationals
Jamaican citizens who also hold British citizenship need to pay close attention to one critical change. As of February 25, dual nationals must travel to the UK using a valid British passport. Failing to do so could result in being denied boarding at the airport.
What Every Jamaican Traveller Should Know
All Jamaican nationals travelling to the UK still require a visa. That has not changed. What has changed is how that visa is issued and stored. Here is a quick summary of what to keep in mind before booking your next trip to Britain.
All visas are now issued digitally as eVisas with no physical sticker in your passport. Travellers should create a UKVI account online to view and manage their visa status. Dual British and Jamaican citizens must travel using a valid British passport. It is always advisable to check the latest UK entry requirements before booking travel.
