Canadian Premier Doug Ford has issued a stark warning in response to President Donald Trump’s newly announced tariffs, threatening to cut off power to 1.5 million U.S. customers. This comes after Trump, shortly after returning to the White House, imposed significant tariffs—25 percent on Canadian and Mexican imports and 10 percent on Chinese goods—aimed at holding these countries accountable for failing to curb the flow of drugs into the U.S.

President Trump suggested that Canada could avoid these tariffs by becoming the U.S.’s “cherished 51st State.” In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the tariffs as unjustified, stating, “There is no justification for these actions.”

The White House justified the tariffs as a necessary measure to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking, citing increased fentanyl production in Canada and a rise in illegal border crossings.

In a bold statement, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, fresh off a third electoral victory, declared his willingness to cut off energy supplies to the U.S. if the tariffs proceed. “If they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do anything, including cutting off their energy—with a smile on my face,” Ford stated. He emphasized Ontario’s critical role in powering 1.5 million homes and industries in states like New York, Michigan, and Minnesota.

Ford reiterated his stance at a mining convention in Toronto, asserting, “They rely on our energy, they need to feel the pain. They want to come at us hard, we’re going to come back twice as hard.” He emphasized the united front of Canadian provinces in opposing the tariffs, regardless of the federal leadership.
