13-Year-Old Had Been Hospitalised Since May Following Serious Injuries Sustained at Home

Kemelia Paul, the 13-year-old Excelsior High School student who had been receiving treatment after being stabbed while attempting to intervene in an altercation at her home in Harbour View, St Andrew, has died.

Her mother, Josephine Mitchell, confirmed the teenager’s passing to The Gleaner on Tuesday afternoon, nearly one month after the incident that left Kemelia critically injured.

According to Mitchell, doctors informed her earlier in the day that her daughter had developed an infection while undergoing treatment. Later, while she was still at the hospital, she received confirmation that Kemelia had died.

The mother said she was finding it difficult to come to terms with the loss of her daughter following weeks of uncertainty surrounding the teenager’s condition.

Hospitalised Since May 9

Kemelia had remained in hospital since May 9 after she sustained serious injuries during an incident at the family’s home in Bayshore Park, Harbour View.

The seventh-grade student reportedly suffered severe wounds after attempting to break up a fight at the residence. Following the incident, she was admitted to hospital, where she remained in critical condition for an extended period.

During her treatment, Kemelia spent time in a coma as medical personnel worked to stabilise her condition.

Public Support During Recovery Efforts

The case attracted widespread public attention across Jamaica, prompting support efforts aimed at assisting Kemelia and her family throughout her hospitalisation.

Individuals from various communities donated blood, contributed financially, and helped source medical supplies needed during her treatment.

The response reflected the concern many Jamaicans had for the teenager and her family as they navigated the medical challenges that followed the stabbing.

Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton also made contact with the family while Kemelia was receiving care.

These developments had provided hope to those closely following her progress, making news of her death particularly difficult for family members, friends, and supporters.
