Japan’s Role in Enhancing Jamaica’s Security Efforts
Jamaica has recently witnessed a substantial decrease in major crimes, particularly murders, a success partly credited to the support from the Government of Japan. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jacqueline Green-Scaffe highlighted Japan’s contributions, stating that their generosity through grants, equipment, and diplomatic goodwill has significantly bolstered the capacity of Jamaica’s security forces.
Strengthening Maritime Patrol Capabilities
A notable aspect of Japan’s assistance includes the donation of five maritime patrol vessels. These vessels are expected to enhance the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) ability to secure the nation’s maritime domain, providing an additional layer of protection for citizens. ACP Green-Scaffe emphasized that this support exemplifies the positive outcomes achievable through international cooperation.
Tangible Impact on Crime Reduction
The impact of Japan’s support is evident in recent crime statistics. As of April 2025, Jamaica has recorded a 35% reduction in murders compared to the previous year. This follows declines of 19% in 2024 and 7% in 2023. Japan’s Ambassador to Jamaica, His Excellency Yasuhiro Atsumi, expressed optimism about these trends and the role of Japan’s cooperation in contributing to the reduction of crime and violence.
Government’s Commitment to National Security
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, acknowledged the efforts of the security forces and the value of international support in improving Jamaica’s security infrastructure. He reiterated the government’s dedication to ensuring a safe country and expressed appreciation for Japan’s contributions to strengthening security teams.
