What was meant to be a lifeline for thousands of Jamaicans recovering from Hurricane Melissa has turned into a devastating blow. A container packed with relief supplies — clothing, food, generators, and essentials — was stolen from a Public Storage facility in Mississauga before volunteers could ship the items overseas.
The theft happened before dawn on Wednesday. When the organizer arrived at 5 a.m., the container was gone. Every single donation vanished.
For the volunteers who spent weeks collecting items, and for the families in Jamaica waiting desperately for help, the loss feels like a punch to the gut.
A Break-In That Crushed a Community Effort
Peel Regional Police say the theft occurred at 3805 Nashua Drive near Derry Road East and Goreway Drive. Investigators found the facility’s gates damaged, a clear sign of forced entry.
The container had been parked there for several days while logistics were being finalized.
Now, everything inside — all the donated goods — has disappeared.
Police have no suspect information, and the investigation is ongoing.
“We Are Deeply Concerned”: Public Storage Canada Speaks Out
Public Storage Canada says they are “deeply concerned,” acknowledging the emotional and practical toll this theft will have on people already struggling.
CEO Troy McLellan says the company intends to help replace what was lost.
“We recognize the impact this may have on communities already facing significant hardship,” he said. “We will work closely with organizers to determine how we can best provide meaningful assistance — whether through financial support, replacing goods, or other measures.”
Why This Hurts So Much: Jamaica’s Crisis After Hurricane Melissa
The stolen supplies were meant for victims of Hurricane Melissa — a catastrophic Category 5 storm that struck Jamaica on October 28.
The storm left at least 45 people dead, dozens missing, and more than 25,000 residents displaced into emergency shelters. Homes were flattened. Communities washed away. Many families lost everything.
For them, these supplies weren’t just donations. They were survival.
A Call for Answers — and Accountability
Local volunteers describe the theft as heartbreaking, senseless, and cruel. People gave generously, believing their help would reach those in desperate need. Instead, criminals intercepted that generosity before it could leave Canadian soil.
Police are urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation unfolds.
The community is hoping for answers — and praying the generosity meant for Jamaica will somehow be restored.
