Good news for the island! Jamaica has climbed to 49th place out of 147 countries in the World Happiness Report 2026, scoring a 6.305 out of 10 on the global happiness scale. That’s a massive jump from 73rd place last year — and it puts Jamaica comfortably in the top third of the happiest nations on earth.
The report was published on March 19 to mark the United Nations’ International Day of Happiness and is now in its 14th edition. It measures how people rate their own lives based on six key factors — income, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and perceptions of corruption.
So where does Jamaica shine? The island’s strongest performance is in social support, ranking 24th globally — a reflection of the strong extended family culture seen across Caribbean societies. However, corruption perceptions remain a challenge, with Jamaica ranking 88th in that category.
Jamaica also outranks several of its Caribbean neighbours, sitting ahead of the Dominican Republic at 64th and Trinidad at 76th.
On the world stage, Finland leads for a record ninth consecutive year, while the United States continues to slide, now sitting at 23rd — one of its lowest positions ever.
One concern flagged in the report is the growing impact of social media on young people’s happiness, particularly among girls. Heavy social media use has been linked to declining well-being among youth in Western countries — something Jamaica may need to watch closely as smartphone use grows on the island.
Overall, this is a proud moment for Jamaica! 🇯🇲 The island is proving that happiness isn’t just about wealth — it’s about community, culture, and resilience. 💚❤️🖤
