Authorities in Newark, New Jersey, say a 39-year-old married woman and her 56-year-old mechanic died after being overcome by carbon monoxide fumes in a parking garage.
The Tragic Discovery
The woman, identified by local reports as Tameka Hargrave, had reportedly arranged to pay the mechanic for car repairs with sex. On the night of July 9, 2018, her husband, Kahali Johnson, returned home to the smell of exhaust fumes. Following the odor, he entered the garage and found both his wife and the mechanic unresponsive near a running vehicle.
Johnson told reporters he immediately realized the toxic fumes had overwhelmed them:
“She’s just a few feet away, she’s laid out. He’s laid out. At that point, I knew they were gone.”
Conflicting Reports
-
Some witnesses and police sources said the pair were discovered inside a running vehicle.
-
Others reported they were found nearby, suggesting they had been overtaken by the fumes while inside the garage.
Either way, investigators concluded carbon monoxide poisoning was the cause of death.
The Silent Killer
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas produced by running engines in enclosed spaces. Experts warn it can kill in minutes, as fumes replace oxygen in the bloodstream without warning signs.
A Shocking End
The story stunned neighbors and quickly spread online, not only because of the circumstances but also because of the tragic and preventable nature of the deaths.
Authorities remind the public that running cars in enclosed garages is dangerous under any circumstances, with or without intimate activity involved.
