Tragedy Deepens: Death Toll from Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica Rises to 28

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Government has confirmed that the death toll from Hurricane Melissa has risen to 28, as search and recovery operations continue across the island.

The update was provided on Saturday following days of assessment and verification by emergency teams.

The Category 5 storm, which made landfall on Tuesday, caused widespread devastation across western parishes, including Westmoreland, St. Elizabeth, Hanover, and St. James.

“We extend heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and communities mourning their loved ones,” said a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM).

The OPM noted that reports of additional possible fatalities are still being verified, with agencies including the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), and the Ministry of Health & Wellness coordinating the ongoing recovery and confirmation process.

Officials say further updates will be provided as verification continues and recovery operations advance in the coming days.
