Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has officially been confirmed by the Senate as the new Secretary of Health and Human Services. His appointment is expected to bring significant changes, particularly in the realm of food and nutrition policies.

Kennedy has frequently emphasized that proper nutrition is essential for overall health. Among his main objectives are reducing “the dominance of ultra-processed foods” and eliminating “harmful food additives and chemicals” from the U.S. food supply.

Many believe that a review and potential ban on commonly used food additives could be on the horizon. Kennedy has been especially vocal about concerns regarding artificial colorings such as Red Dye 40 and Yellow No. 5, which remain prevalent in many food products.

Despite his strong stance on food safety, Kennedy has made it clear that he does not intend to ban specific foods outright. In an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, he clarified that he supports “freedom of choice” in dietary decisions.

“If you want to eat Twinkies, you ought to be able to eat them,” Kennedy stated. However, he pledged to implement “radical transparency” in educating the public about food ingredients and their potential health effects.

Kennedy also stressed the importance of providing healthier meal options in schools. Additionally, he criticized the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for encouraging the consumption of processed foods and sugary beverages.

“We shouldn’t be subsidizing people to eat poison,” he remarked.

During an interview with Steve Gruber in September 2024, Kennedy linked artificial food dyes in fast food to declining life expectancy rates. Addressing fast-food industry practices, he suggested that chains like McDonald’s should return to cooking fries in beef tallow rather than seed oils. He has long considered seed oils to be “one of the most unhealthy ingredients in food,” arguing that their widespread use is a result of government subsidies and that they contribute to inflammation-related health issues.

Kennedy’s tenure as Health and Human Services Secretary is expected to bring a renewed focus on transparency, healthier food alternatives, and stricter oversight on food additives.
