PM Holness Thanks China for Hurricane Support in Jamaica
In the weeks after Hurricane Melissa tore through communities across the island, Jamaica’s recovery depended not only on local resilience but also on timely international support. That support, Prime Minister Andrew Holness says, came strongly from China.
Speaking on December 23 at the handover of new equipment to the National Solid Waste Management Authority in Kingston, Holness publicly expressed Jamaica’s gratitude for China’s role in helping the country recover and rebuild.

Hurricane Melissa left widespread damage, blocking roads, disrupting medical services, and overwhelming cleanup efforts. According to Holness, China’s assistance addressed both urgent needs and long term recovery challenges.
The Chinese government donated 10 new tipper trucks valued at approximately J$200 million to support waste removal and debris clearance across affected communities. The trucks were officially handed over to the NSWMA, strengthening Jamaica’s ability to restore normalcy after extreme weather events.

Hospital Ship Brings Medical Relief to Thousands
One of the most impactful aspects of China hurricane support Jamaica was the deployment of China’s navy hospital ship, the Silk Road Ark.
The vessel spent 11 days in Jamaican waters, providing emergency and specialized medical services at several locations including Montego Bay Cruise Pier, Port Royal Pier, and Falmouth Pier.

Holness noted that ministers were deeply impressed by the scale and professionalism of the medical response, and that thousands of Jamaicans directly benefited from the care provided.

More Than Medicine: Donations and Health Education
Beyond surgeries and consultations, the Chinese medical team also donated medicines to Jamaica’s public health system and conducted health education lectures.

Heavy Equipment to Strengthen Disaster Response

Once delivered, the equipment will be maintained by the Jamaica Defence Force, while remaining the property of the National Works Agency. This arrangement allows for faster deployment during landslides, floods, and future hurricanes.
