Crab Vendor Alice Makes Comeback Despite Controversy at Heroes Circle

Alice Waugh, the veteran crab vendor at the center of the Crab Circle controversy, is reportedly returning to her longtime spot at National Heroes Circle, despite previous statements from city officials that she would not be reinstated.

Waugh, who has sold at Crab Circle for over 40 years, became the focus of public backlash in 2023 after a video surfaced showing her defecating in a bucket at her stall. The incident led to the temporary closure of the popular food hub and a $250,000 fine under the Public Health Act.

Despite the controversy, Waugh has expressed her desire to return to Crab Circle, stating that she is not “nasty” and maintains good hygiene practices. Some fellow vendors have also advocated for her return, arguing that she deserves a second chance.

However, city officials, including the mayor, have indicated that Waugh was not invited to participate in the recertification process for vendors, effectively barring her return.

As of now, it remains unclear whether Waugh has officially resumed vending at Crab Circle or if her return is being contested by local authorities.
