Alyssa James Is Ranked 42nd In The World. Jamaica Should Know Her Name.

Written by Primenewsplus

When people talk about Jamaican athletes, they mean sprinters. Usain Bolt. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. The names that built a global brand around a small island’s ability to produce the fastest humans on earth.

Alyssa James is building something different.

At 18, the Kingston-born tennis player has climbed to 42nd on the ITF World Junior Rankings — a career high, and the highest any Jamaican tennis player, male or female, has ever reached. The rise didn’t happen overnight. Between March 2 and 23, James competed as part of the ITF Grand Slam Player Development Programme’s South American Touring Team, reaching the quarter-finals of every singles event she entered and capturing two doubles titles along the way.

The bigger milestone came in Gaspar, Brazil, where she won the J500 Banana Bowl — becoming the first Jamaican in history to win a tournament at that level. The J500 is among the highest tiers of junior tennis globally, and no Jamaican had ever stood on that podium before her.

None of this happened with the infrastructure that typically produces players at this level. Jamaica has no national tennis academy. No Grand Slam hosting history. No deep pipeline of junior development funding. James trains full-time at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in Florida and balances that with a 3.74 GPA as a Grade 12 student at Laurel Springs School.

In August she begins her collegiate career at the University of Virginia — a programme that has already produced WTA players including Emma Navarro and Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins. Her 2026 calendar includes all four Junior Grand Slams, select events on the ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour, the Billie Jean King Cup, and the Central American and Caribbean Games.

She is also the number one ranked junior female tennis player in the entire Caribbean and Central American region.

Jamaica builds world-class athletes in places nobody is watching. Alyssa James is proof. It’s time to pay attention.
