What appeared to be a routine attempt to cash a check at a TD Bank in Florida quickly turned into a police investigation involving a compromised bank account, suspected identity theft and reports that several bank branches in multiple states had been contacted.
The January 26, 2024 incident unfolded at a TD Bank branch in West Palm Beach, where an alert teller noticed something unusual about a check presented for approximately $4,000.
Police body-camera footage captured what happened next.
Teller Notices Something Is Wrong
According to statements captured on the bodycam footage, the amount of the check initially prompted the teller to take a closer look.
She then compared the document with previous checks associated with the account and noticed several differences.
The teller told a deputy that the signature appeared as though someone else had written it. She also noticed differences in how numbers and letters were formed and how the dollar amount was written.
The physical check itself apparently did not immediately appear suspicious. Instead, it was the small inconsistencies in the writing that raised concerns. The teller also explained that identifying these types of warning signs was part of her bank training. Pasted text
Another employee reviewed the check and contacted the account holder.
That phone call changed everything.
Account Holder Was Already at a TD Bank in Pennsylvania
The bank employees discovered that the account holder was not in Florida.
In fact, she was already at her local TD Bank branch in Pennsylvania dealing with suspected fraud involving her account when the West Palm Beach branch called.
According to the account holder’s statement to police, she had received an earlier call from a TD Bank branch in Charleston, South Carolina, after someone reportedly contacted that location while pretending to be her.
While she was heading to her local bank, she said she received another call from a TD Bank branch in Massachusetts concerning a similar suspicious inquiry.
Then came the call from Florida: someone was reportedly standing inside the West Palm Beach branch attempting to cash a check for approximately $4,000 from her account. Pasted text
Seven Bank Branches Reportedly Contacted
The situation appeared to extend far beyond one questionable check.
The account holder told investigators that information on her account indicated someone had contacted seven different TD Bank branches, apparently attempting to obtain information such as account balances.
She also told police that whoever was behind the activity appeared to have extensive personal information, including her banking details, date of birth, address and Social Security number.
The account was subsequently closed as the suspected fraud was addressed. Pasted text
Woman Detained While Deputies Investigated
Bodycam footage shows deputies detaining the woman who had presented the check while they spoke with bank employees and contacted the account holders.
An officer repeatedly explained that she was initially being detained while investigators determined what had happened. Pasted text
Investigators gathered statements from the employees, examined the identification and check presented at the bank, and spoke directly with the account holders.
The account holders confirmed that they had not authorized the woman in Florida to use the account or cash the check. Pasted text
Woman Says a Friend Gave Her the Check
One of the most significant moments came when deputies questioned the woman with the assistance of a Spanish-speaking officer.
After being advised of her rights in Spanish, she reportedly told investigators that a friend had given her the check and asked her to cash it.
According to the translation captured on bodycam, she said the friend promised to give her a portion of the money after the check was cashed.
She also told police that she had specifically asked the person whether cashing the check would get her into trouble with law enforcement.
According to her account, the person assured her there would be no problem and told her it was a legitimate check. She also told investigators that she had messages relating to the arrangement. Pasted text
Later in the interview, she reportedly said she had been told that the money was connected to some type of refund involving a house. Pasted text
A Purse Also Became Part of the Investigation
The bodycam footage reveals another unusual detail.
When investigators asked about a purse in the woman’s possession, she reportedly said it belonged to another woman who had been in the vehicle with her.
She said the other woman gave her the purse so she would have somewhere to place the money after cashing the check because she had only brought a small wallet. Pasted text
She also confirmed through the translator that she had signed the check when instructed to do so at the bank. Pasted text
The Legal Questions Behind the Bodycam Footage
The video containing the bodycam footage also provides legal commentary about several issues raised by the encounter.
Among them is the difference between an investigative detention and an arrest, as well as when police must have reasonable suspicion or probable cause.
The analysis also examines the woman’s Miranda warning, which was delivered with the assistance of a Spanish-speaking officer before investigators questioned her about the check. Pasted text
Another major issue discussed is willful blindness, sometimes called deliberate ignorance.
The legal analysis focuses particularly on the woman’s statement that she had asked whether cashing the check could cause problems with police before agreeing to do it.
However, those statements and the video’s legal conclusions should be distinguished from a court finding. The bodycam shows investigators gathering evidence and questioning those involved; it does not by itself establish criminal guilt.
What Happened to the Case?
According to the legal analysis accompanying the footage, the woman was ultimately placed into Florida’s Pre-Trial Intervention Program.
The video explains that the diversion program can allow eligible defendants to resolve a case through supervision and other requirements rather than proceeding through a traditional criminal prosecution. Pasted text
That outcome is important: the allegations surrounding the check should not be presented as though the bodycam footage itself proves a criminal conviction.

The video below shows portions of the police body-camera footage from the TD Bank investigation and includes legal commentary examining the officers’ actions, the suspected forged check, Miranda rights and other legal issues raised by the case.
The footage provides a rare look at how one alert bank teller noticing small differences in a check helped uncover what appeared to be a much larger problem involving a compromised account and suspicious activity reported across several bank branches.
