The internet is rallying around an 18-year-old girl who went no-contact with her adoptive parents after they skipped her high school graduation — to buy a rare $350 collectible doll for her younger sister.
In a now-viral Reddit post, the teen shared her heartbreak over what should have been one of the biggest days of her life. “I waited for them after the ceremony, thinking they were just running late,” she wrote. “Then I got a text that they ‘couldn’t make it’ because they had to drive to another city for a limited-edition Labubu drop.”

Yes, they skipped her graduation to buy a doll.
“I Didn’t Expect a Party. I Just Wanted Them There.”
The teen, adopted at age 8 after spending years in foster care, said she’s always been low-maintenance and never expected much. But she hoped they would at least show up for her graduation — a milestone she never thought she’d reach.
Instead, she watched other students take photos with their families while standing alone in her cap and gown. “It hit me like a truck,” she wrote. “I wasn’t worth the drive, but a toy was.”

The parents drove four hours to a pop-up sale for a rare Labubu designer figure — a collectible doll that’s gained cult status among certain collectors and can resell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. The doll was for her 12-year-old sister, who “would’ve been disappointed if they missed it.”
When the teen confronted them later, she says her mother told her to “stop being dramatic” and that “there will be other graduations.” But for the teen, this was the final straw.
Internet Takes Her Side
The post triggered an outpouring of support online.
-
“They didn’t just miss your graduation. They showed you where you stand,” one user commented.
-
“You’re not wrong for walking away. Blood or not, family shows up.”
-
“They chose a toy over you. Never let them gaslight you into thinking that’s love.”
Others pointed out the disturbing emotional message the parents sent: that their biological child’s disappointment was more important than their adopted child’s accomplishments.
“I’m Done Begging to Be Loved”
The teen has since cut all contact with her adoptive parents and says she plans to build a new life on her own terms. “I’m done begging to be loved like I matter,” she wrote. “I didn’t want a party. I just wanted someone in the crowd clapping for me.”
COMMENTERS SAY:
