A young police officer has died in the line of duty after stopping to help motorists involved in a crash on a San Diego freeway, authorities confirmed Tuesday.

What Happened

On the evening of October 20, 2025, Officer Lauren Craven, 25, of the La Mesa Police Department, pulled over on eastbound Interstate 8 near Fairmount Avenue after coming across a vehicle collision.

While she was assisting those involved in the crash, another vehicle struck her, killing her instantly. The driver she had stopped to help, a 19-year-old man identified by family members as De’Veonte Morris, also died in the collision.

Grief Across San Diego

News of her death has devastated the department and the wider San Diego County community. Fellow officers described Craven as “fearless and selfless,” noting that she “embodied the heart of service.”

Vigils and memorials have been organized across the region, with residents leaving flowers and notes of gratitude at the police station where she served.

Investigation and Reminder

The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into what caused the chain of events that led to the crash. Early findings indicate that Officer Craven had stopped to protect others—when tragedy struck.

Authorities are reminding drivers to slow down and move over when they see emergency lights on the roadside.

A Hero Remembered

Officer Lauren Craven’s death is a stark reminder of the risks that come with wearing the badge. She was young, brave, and driven by duty—a life taken too soon while serving others.

Her legacy will live on through the lives she touched, and through every officer who continues to protect the public in her memory.
