Holness Warns of “War” Against False Information
LITTLE LONDON, Westmoreland — Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness says his Administration will aggressively counter what he describes as deliberate misinformation aimed at confusing and dividing Jamaicans during the Hurricane Melissa recovery process.
Speaking at the grand opening of the new Little London Police Station on Friday, Holness condemned what he called a “culture of mischief” in public discourse, where rumors and distorted narratives circulate online.
“Mi nuh fraid ah nuhbody… Every nonsense you talk, I will respond to it,”
Holness declared.
“We cannot allow the people who peddle nonsense… to win — so we will have it out.”
Government Defends Pace and Fairness of Aid Relief
Critics, including the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP), have accused the Government of slow delivery and politicisation of emergency support in western parishes hit hard by Hurricane Melissa.
Holness rejected those claims, stating that the focus must remain on unity and recovery — not political attacks. He announced a transition from food packages to vouchers, allowing affected residents to buy needed supplies directly.
“It is disgusting that persons would want to make political issues over aid,”
he said.
“We are shifting to coupons or cards so people can choose what they need.”
New Police Station Opening “Not in Conflict” With Recovery Funding
Responding to questions about the timing of the police station opening, Holness explained that the project began in 2017 under a partnership with the National Housing Trust (NHT). He emphasised that public safety infrastructure must grow alongside housing development in the Little London area.
Call for National Unity During Disaster Recovery
Holness urged Jamaicans to adopt a positive mindset and avoid amplifying misinformation during a critical phase of rebuilding.
“As we manage the disaster, we also have to manage the false information,”
he said.
“Think about your country and what you are doing.”
