Kristi Noem’s tenure as Secretary of Homeland Security was already under pressure — but it was a single, explosive question during a congressional hearing that reportedly pushed the Trump administration over the edge.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the tipping point came during a tense House Judiciary Committee hearing when Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove asked Noem point-blank whether she had engaged in a sexual relationship with longtime Trump adviser Corey Lewandowski during her time leading DHS.
The room went silent.
“Mr. Chairman, I am shocked that we’re going down and peddling tabloid garbage in this committee today,” Noem fired back. The congresswoman stood firm, pointing out that Lewandowski held a position as a special government employee working directly with the White House.
But the damage was done.
“The question about the affair at the hearing was actually the final straw,” one source said. Another insider described a growing sense of frustration inside the administration — “It kept mounting up.” A third source close to the situation added bluntly: “There was just no going back with the two hearings. It all became about her and him.”
Lewandowski himself declined to weigh in. “You’re asking me to speculate on things that I have no insight into,” he said when pressed.
The alleged relationship had reportedly been an open secret for years. One insider said: “This has been a known, open thing and we’ve all been waiting for it to blow up at some point.” What made it politically toxic was Lewandowski’s unusual level of influence inside the department — he served as an unpaid special government employee and functioned as an unofficial chief of staff to Noem.
The affair controversy wasn’t Noem’s only headache. Trump was blindsided after Noem told senators he had personally approved a $220 million border security advertising campaign. “I never knew anything about it,” Trump said. One of the ads featured Noem riding a horse in front of Mount Rushmore, delivering a stern warning to would-be migrants.
Trump confirmed the change on Truth Social, announcing that Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin would take over as DHS Secretary effective March 31, 2026. Despite the messy exit, Trump praised Noem’s record — particularly on border security — and said she would move into a new role as Special Envoy.
As for Lewandowski, one particularly eyebrow-raising incident stood out: he once fired a Coast Guard pilot after Noem’s blanket was not transferred to a replacement aircraft during an official government trip.
It was, in the end, a tenure defined less by policy — and more by the chaos that surrounded it.
