Jamaica Information Service Pays Tribute to Former Reporter Alecia Smith

The Jamaica Information Service (JIS) is mourning the loss of Alecia Nicole Smith, a former reporter whose impactful journalism left an enduring legacy. Alecia passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, after battling illness, leaving behind colleagues, friends, and family in deep sorrow.

Alecia Smith: A Passionate Journalist and Storyteller

Alecia Smith, a past student of Herbert Morrison High School, pursued her passion for journalism by earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Communications with a minor in Philosophy from the University of the West Indies (UWI) in 2007.

She joined the JIS Editorial Department in 2008 and dedicated 14 years of her career to informing the nation about government policies, parliamentary proceedings, and human interest stories that highlighted the real-life impact of public sector initiatives.

Excellence in Journalism and Storytelling

Known for her exceptional writing skills and journalistic integrity, Alecia was regarded as a talented feature writer. She had a unique ability to tell the stories of ordinary Jamaicans, showcasing how government programmes improved lives across the country.

Her work went beyond reporting — Alecia captured the heart of the Jamaican people, leaving behind a rich archive of stories that document the nation’s history and progress.

Colleagues Remember Alecia’s Professionalism and Friendship

Chris Patterson, a close friend and colleague who joined JIS alongside Alecia in 2008, shared heartfelt memories of their bond:

“I respected her skills as a prolific writer and a journalist of high integrity. I valued her friendship and cherished her honesty and genuineness dearly. There are no words to express the depth of my sorrow,” Patterson expressed.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of JIS, Celia Lindsay, also paid tribute to Alecia, describing her as:

“An excellent news writer who was committed to getting the job done at a high standard, always. Alecia’s passing is a tremendous loss, and we are deeply saddened.”

Alecia Smith’s Legacy Lives On

Alecia’s contribution to journalism in Jamaica will forever be remembered. Her work, documented in countless news articles and feature stories, remains a valuable resource for students, researchers, and future generations seeking insight into Jamaica’s development and the voices of its people.

After leaving JIS in 2022 to join the private media sector, Alecia continued to uphold the high standards of journalism she developed at JIS.
