Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Wedding: A Fairytale to Remember

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding was nothing short of a modern fairytale. From the moment their relationship became public, the world eagerly followed their love story, anticipating the next big step. It wasn’t long before Harry proposed during a cozy evening at home while Meghan was preparing a roasted chicken.

Recalling the heartfelt moment, the former Suits actress described it as “sweet, natural, and incredibly romantic.” She shared, “He got on one knee, and honestly, I could barely let him finish before saying, ‘Can I say yes now?’”

Their spectacular wedding took place on May 19, 2018, at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor. The star-studded guest list included George Clooney, Serena Williams, David and Victoria Beckham, James Corden, and Oprah Winfrey. Meghan dazzled in a Givenchy wedding gown designed by Clare Waight Keller, complemented by the breathtaking Queen Mary’s bandeau tiara, once owned by Queen Mary, the grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II.

Leading up to the wedding, Prince Harry and Prince William reportedly clashed over the venue. In his memoir Spare, Harry revealed that he initially suggested Westminster Abbey, but William dismissed the idea, noting that he and Kate had married there seven years earlier. When Harry proposed St. Paul’s Cathedral, William deemed it “too grand,” pointing out that their parents, Charles and Diana, had wed there.

As the discussion continued, William suggested Tetbury, a small chapel near Highgrove House in Gloucestershire. Harry found the idea surprising, recalling in Spare, “I snorted. Tetbury? The chapel near Highgrove? Seriously, Willy? How many does that place seat?” William countered, “Isn’t that what you wanted – a small, quiet wedding?”

Although Harry and Meghan had initially dreamed of an intimate barefoot ceremony in Botswana, royal expectations dictated otherwise. Eventually, they settled on St. George’s Chapel, a venue steeped in royal tradition.

Beyond the venue debate, there were other family discussions surrounding the ceremony. According to Harry, there was some contention over whether Meghan, as a divorcee, should wear a veil. Additionally, tensions rose when Harry insisted on keeping his beard for the wedding, which reportedly upset William.

Despite the pre-wedding disputes, the ceremony itself was magical. Reflecting on the moment Meghan walked down the aisle, Harry shared, “I stood at the altar, smoothing the front of my Household Cavalry uniform, and watched Meg floating towards me. I had carefully chosen the procession music, ultimately selecting Handel’s ‘Eternal Source of Light Divine.’ As the soloist’s voice echoed through the chapel, I knew I had made the right choice. Watching her come closer, I silently gave thanks for every decision that led to this moment.”

Interestingly, Harry’s best man was his longtime friend Charlie, rather than Prince William. Many royal watchers speculated that this decision was a sign of the brothers’ strained relationship, which may have begun around this time. Harry later wrote, “I wondered if he was upset that he wasn’t my best man. Was he annoyed because I had asked Charlie instead? The Royal Family announced Willy as my best man just as they had done when he married Kate. Did that have something to do with it?”

Despite the tensions leading up to their nuptials, Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding was an unforgettable occasion, filled with love, elegance, and history.
