Texas High School Murder Case: No Death Penalty for Teen Suspect

Karmelo Anthony, a 17-year-old student from Texas, is facing first-degree murder charges following the tragic stabbing of fellow student Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet on April 2, 2025. However, authorities have confirmed that Anthony will not face the death penalty if convicted.

Why Karmelo Anthony Won’t Face the Death Penalty

Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis announced that due to U.S. Supreme Court precedent — specifically the 2005 Roper v. Simmons ruling — individuals who commit crimes under the age of 18 cannot be sentenced to death or life without parole.

“Even if we wanted to seek the death penalty, the law prohibits it for juveniles,” Willis told WFAA.

Details of the Fatal Stabbing Incident at Kuykendall Stadium

According to police reports and witness statements, the fatal altercation took place in the bleachers at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas, during a multi-school track and field championship.

Witnesses allege that Metcalf asked Anthony to move from under a team tent. The confrontation escalated when Anthony reportedly threatened, “Touch me and see what happens.” Moments later, after a brief physical exchange, Anthony allegedly stabbed Metcalf with a knife he retrieved from his backpack.

What Happens Next in the Case?

As of now, the Collin County District Attorney’s Office has not officially received the case for prosecution, as the investigation is ongoing.

Anthony’s defense team is expected to request a reduction of his current $1 million bond during an upcoming court hearing.

Willis also expressed his desire for the case to remain in Collin County, allowing local residents to serve as jurors.

While the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf has sent shockwaves through the Frisco, Texas community, legal restrictions ensure that Karmelo Anthony will not face capital punishment if convicted. The case continues to develop as both sides prepare for court proceedings.
